Dark Side Getting Brighter

Two years ago my life was as it had always been. A wonderful husband, two wonderful children and a soon to be great son-in-law. A beautiful home, a great yard to work in and some great dogs. I worked two days a week at a job that I had done for almost 30 years. I worked at a Veterinary Hospital, I was a licensed technician. It really wasn't a job it was just a part of my life. I was not very good on computers nor did I want to be. I refrained to them as the "Dark Side". I was lucky if I could send an email and I certainly could not attach anything to it! I was okay with all that and little did I know my life was about to change drastically. Because of circumstances due to employees leaving and the lovely ecomomy I was asked to come and work at O&H. Of course I was skeptical that I could do the job.....computers, copiers, scanners, fax machines, lots of them...truly the dark side. But my husband needed me and so I answered the call. I went to work 5 days a week....count them 5....that was enough change right there. I had to learn a computer system and new programs. I know more about credit card transactions and how they work than I ever wanted to know. And don't get me started with Insurance companies. In the beginning I was beyond frustrated but I kept at it and before I knew it my old brain was learning new things! It was kind of exciting but don't get me wrong that 5 day a week thing was still not good! And on top of that I would be spending 24/7 with my husband. I had many people warn me it was not going to be a good thing and to be honest I wondered the same. Now Jeff and I have never had any trouble being together but every day....all day long and then the evening and the night! But I have to say at least for me, it has brought us closer and our relationship is stronger than ever before. We are a team in life and at work and we made it through 2009! You who know him will have to ask him if he feels the same! I now have 3 office spaces.....yes count them 3! One at home and now 2 at O&H. Another change in staff and so I am filling in for the time being. Yes, 3 computers and all the stuff that goes with them! I have truly gone to the "Dark Side" and I am afraid there is no turning back. And Yes....I am still working 5 days a week!

Home Office

Oldfield & Helsdon sign out front in Fircrest.

Recption area.

My lovely flower arrangement.....by the way interior decorator added to my resume. I still need to improve on these skills!

My first desk at O&H. This is where it all started. This is where I take care of all of the Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, Statements, answer the phone, receptionist, don't forget dealing with insurance companies, IRS, and the list goes on!

This is my new desk at O&H. This is where I am learning how to file motions, pleadings and all that other legal stuff that I have no idea what it is. Did you know if you are going to file an answer to a motion, if you have to do it in 5 days you don't count weekends and holidays but if you have 11 days you do.....or something like that! Ask Jeff in another week....how things are going!

So when I have had enough of the office, I still come home to my beautiful home, my wonderful husband, one of my wonderful children because he is home from college and looking forward to the other wonderful child with her great husband coming to visit in August. I come home to my backyard, my garden, my flowers and my dogs and sometimes even a good party but of course always to a good glass of Wine!

  3. Great post! I am proud of you, too! I loved working with my husband for many years, too. My door is always open to you Darcie, but I don't want to get on the "dark side" with your mom...I value our friendship too much!
